How to make a torsion spring
Torsion spring is a relatively high-precision spring accessory. Ordinary spring machines cannot meet the processing requirements of 1800 degrees for the production of this springs. Generally, spring machines are used for the production of torsion springs at home and abroad. Compared in accuracy, this springs can achieve molding and positioning of different angles and shapes. It is a relatively common CNC universal machine and fully automatic production equipment. An elastic element widely used in torque spring machines and the electronic industry.Here is a brief introduction of how to make a torsion spring.
- Coil torsion spring. The process is basically the same as that of spiral compression and tension springs, but the difference is also the processing of the ends. In the case of small batch production and relatively complex torsion arms, most of them are formed by manual or semi-automatic winding spring method with a central shaft, and then the torsion arms are processed according to the drawing requirements using a tooling jig. During mass production, it can be rolled on a straight tail spring winding machine and a special torsion spring machine. If the torsion arm cannot be completed according to the drawing, it can be processed using tooling and fixtures in a separate order. According to the characteristics of spiral torsion springs, the following two points should also be noted during design and manufacturing:
- The torsion arm at the end of the spiral torsion spring should be bent and formed every time during manufacturing to avoid processing defects and correct the reshaping process. After the torsion arm is processed, a second stress relief annealing should be performed;
- Currently, spiral torsion springs are mostly dense coils, which creates a compression force between the coils that is similar to the initial tension of the tension spring. During loading and unloading, friction occurs and hysteresis occurs. When the direction of loading and rotation is the same or the number of coils increases, this tendency increases; In addition, it also brings difficulties to the surface treatment process. Therefore, when designing and forming, a slight gap should be left between the spring coils. In mass production, when conditions permit, manufacturers can use hydraulic and pneumatic methods to process spiral stretching, torsion spring deployment, bending, and hooking.
Attention for Making Torsion Spring
1.Requirements for upsetting at both ends
It is recommended to use the free die forging method or the top upsetting method with bars for both ends upsetting to obtain a continuous and uniform streamline fiber. The grains of this streamline fiber are oriented along the axis of the torsion spring, and the metal crystal fiber flow from the rod body to the spline tooth transition is not broken.
2. Surface processing requirements
The surface shall have sufficient machining allowance to ensure the final grinding amount. In turning and grinding, profiling is generally used to ensure the machining accuracy of circular arcs (or tapers), and no knife or grinding marks are allowed. For minimum machining of various hot rolled steel with different diameters, specific surface quality requirements can be set for the blank to reduce the processing amount for mass produced torsion springs, considering the surface processing costs. For torsion springs with dry surfaces that are not machined (such as springs with non circular cross sections), requirements for limiting surface decarburization, surface defects, and surface dimensional tolerances should be proposed.
3.Requirements for heat treatment
Heat treatment is a key process for manufacturing high-strength torsion springs. For 45CrNIMOVA materials, the heat treatment hardness is increased to HRC52-58, and then subjected to strong torsion to achieve the best strong torsion effect and maximum working stress of the torsion spring.
4. Requirements for surface strengthening treatment
In order to increase the fatigue life of the torsion spring, mechanical strengthening treatment should be carried out for the torsion spring, generally using surface strengthening methods such as rolling and shot peening,
5. Surface protection requirements
In order to prevent corrosion and damage to the mechanical surface, surface treatment (such as phosphating and painting), as well as using rubber tape, nylon cloth, epoxy resin paint layer, and other methods can be used for protection.
